Honeymoon Horror

Avoiding Travel Fraud

You’re married, you’re packed, you’re at the airport, and your tickets… don’t exist?! When travel fraud hits you on your honeymoon, it’s liable to turn that bouquet into a pile of weeds. Don’t panic, just play it safe.

Paradise lost.
When booking your trip, don’t trust CheapAndAlmostLegalVacations.com! And don’t call that travel agent whose number you found plastered on a bus stop. Always rely on reputable vendors—you can check your wedding site and magazines and go with their ads, or you can call the place of your dreams directly. For discounts, try places like Travelocity.com and Hotels.com. Also, be sure to ask vendors—even your caterer will have suggestions—and talk to your friends. Honeymoon word-of-mouth is what major hotel chains around the world depend on, so talk to as many wedded couples you know.

Another good idea is to use the reference list on the back of guidebooks. This is especially valuable if your destination is somewhere abroad. While they may simply list hotels in Amsterdam, it’s a good starting-off point. Call the hotel directly, and then do some comparison shopping on the web. Also, find a list of tourism bureaus; call their toll-free numbers and ask about guides to, say, Jamaica.
Never blindly give credit-card information to anyone, but always use a credit card that has fraud protection should you need it. You might also find that your credit card company works with hotel operators around the world; it doesn’t get much safer than that.

While the merits of travel agents in the Internet age vary, if you know a good one, use them for your honeymoon. The advantage here is that they’ll be used to dealing with honeymoon couples, and will have inside information on how to get upgrades, and special amenities like champagne, etc. Also, if you’re visiting an unusual and not-often-traveled place, the simple comfort of a knowledgeable planner will put your mind at ease. That way, you’ll have much more time to spend on important matters, like that perfect honeymoon bed.
