Diving Into Love

Honeymoons in Curacao

There are so many spectacular things to do in Curacao. Hit one of 30 beaches, gamble at the casinos, speak Spanish at the Dutch bar. Wait, was that a typo? Nope, Curacao, that gorgeous piece of Caribbean paradise just fifty miles north of South America, is also one of the most diverse islands on earth.

Part of the ABC Islands (the other two being Aruba and Bonaire), Dutch-owned Curacao is safely outside of the Hurricane Belt, and safely divine. Average yearly rainfall is only 22 inches, and the average temperature is in the mid-80s. Diving is hugely popular here, as is strolling the main town of Willemstad, a Crayon-colored Netherlands dream. The sidewalk cafes are filled with a cross-section of pleasure-seeking folks from all over the world. If you can’t quite make out that accent at the next table, it’s probably Papiamento, a combination of Spanish, Dutch, French, and everything else in the world’s kitchen sink.

Curacao’s resorts range from casual diving spots, to on-the-waterfront beauties. Below are a few places that we've enjoyed.  For more information on prices and hotel options, visit Curacao's official tourist webpage.

Hotel Kura Hulanda Spa and Casino: This gorgeous hotel, just 15 minutes from the airport, feels like a city of its own. Stroll the grounds, hit the casino, the amazing spa, or just sip coffee by the outdoor café. Each room has one-of-a-kind art, and the African Slave Museum is a must-see educational experience. Debonair owner and philanthropist Jacob Dekker is often strolling the grounds—he’ll say bon bini to you before you’ve managed to get up the nerve to speak with him. That’s Curacao! Contact (5999)/434-7700.

Habitat: Twenty minutes from the main town, Habitat is all about the diving. So much so, you can take the plunge 24/7. At night, everyone gathers around the main bar and talks about the day’s sights. Don’t fret, however, if you didn’t manage to hit the seas. There’s also a lazy, cliffside pool to sip drinks by. Habitat is known for its quiet ambience, for those late-night walks along the water, far away from the maddening crowd. Rooms are modest and delightful, each one with a balcony for morning coffee, a game of cards, or just gazing up at the stars. Contact (5999)/864-8304.

Avila Beach Hotel: Locals and tourists flock here for a multitude of reasons. Originally a home for royalty, the hotel consists of the main house (built in the 18th century), and a more modern addition (the Belle Alliance). Both are beautiful options, as is the incredible restaurant on the beach, where everyone comes to hear the jazz music play. The main lobby is so enchanting, with its marble floors, piano player, and original artwork, you’ll be hard-pressed to go to your room—but make sure you get there eventually. There are private nooks and crannies on the grounds, those perfect spots for a quick kiss, a stolen glance, and everything else you’ve ever dreamed about. Call (5999)/461/4377.
