The heart of the home, the kitchen bears the brunt of our busy lives, and is usually in need of some organization CPR.

Most family members spend a lot of time in the kitchen, or at least make frequent visits. This usually leads to "stuff deposits and migrations." For example, when you walk in the door with the mail in your hand, and set it on the kitchen counter. Or, when your child comes into the kitchen for a cookie and leaves a trail of shoes, toys, etc.

One of the first steps is deciding what you do and do not want in the kitchen. Obviously, you wouldn't want a child's shoes in the way. If you pay bills in the kitchen, then that might actually be the best place for the bills. If not, find another place that makes more sense. If something is not of use in the kitchen, it shouldn't be in there contributing to the clutter.

Next, you'll want to go through everything in the kitchen. Only keep the things you use, or will be using. Everything else should be removed to the trash, recycling bin, or into a garage sale/charitable donation container. Do your best to be realistic. For example, if you never use something because it's chipped, then why are you letting it take up valuable space? Consider where it might be of better use, if any.

Once you've cleaned things out, assess your storage space. Most people feel boxed-in due to the nature of kitchen cabinetry, but there are a few options. One option is to go up. Sometimes there is space on top of the cabinets you can use to put items you rarely use. There may be a space to add a wall shelf or two. Or there is the excellent option of a pot rack. Give your kitchen a good look to see if there is potential storage space you might be missing.

If you’re built-in cabinetry leaves something to be desired, you may want to add a freestanding cabinet or baker's rack to the mix. There are a multitude of cabinets, hutches, and baker's racks on the market today, and most are stylish, as well as practical.

If you don't already have a built-in kitchen island, you can add wonderful storage space by purchasing a kitchen island or cart. This is an attractive way to increase your workspace too! Kitchen carts come in a variety of sizes, so there is likely one to suit your space. And as most of them are on wheels, they are easily moved about and can even do double duty as serving carts.
