Finding His Perfect Wedding Band


At one time, the groom didn’t pay too much attention to his own wedding ring. Nowadays, men go for the gold too.  Grooms browse and search and compare styles, all to get the perfect fit to last a lifetime. Should your guy want to choose his own ring, by all means let him, as it’s a purchase he’ll cherish forever.

“The guy should pick out his ring ahead of time,” advises New York Jewelry Expert Hayley Henning. “He needs to get a feel for what he likes, and what he’s comfortable wearing.” Once he’s found the ring, the bride traditionally pays for it, and holds it until giving it to the Best Man on the day of the wedding.

The groom’s ring search can begin anytime after the engagement, but make sure you’ve taken care of it at least 1 month before your wedding. Since it’s one of the tasks that can be done immediately, the sooner you take care of it, the less you have to worry about once your wedding day approaches. “He should notice other people’s rings immediately,” says Henning. “He needs to find out whether he likes white gold, yellow gold, or a heavy ring.”

Unless the ring your groom picks out is highly customized, it should be ready within two weeks of purchase. Ask the retailer ahead of time, so there are no last-minute surprises.

The groom’s ring does not have to match the bridal ring, or complement it. Your groom should wear whatever he’s comfortable with and think of it as completely separate from your band.

There’s no appropriate or “traditional” amount of money you should spend on the groom’s ring (an 18-karat band costs approximately $200); your purchase should be based on style and your own budget. In addition to gold, platinum rings are very popular for men. They are slightly more costly than gold, and just as stellar.
