Modern Wedding Fashion
Today's Best Bridal Fashions

The fashion forward amongst us know that designers are always looking to the past for new creation inspiration, and this year is no exception.  Looking to 2010, we’re seeing the meeting of ‘60s glam and ‘80s flair.

Start working those arms, girl: Strapless wedding dresses are in big-time this year, in a range of styles.  The only requirements are good arms and strong support.  They can be found in formal ball-gowns or more subdued A-lines.  The other tall order this year is short skirts; mini-dresses are back, and if you’ve got the gams, a gorgeous and chic choice for a cocktail-party affair.  Either way, baroque embroidery is all over the place: on bodices, skirts, even trains.

Ball gowns never go out of style, and are always a safe choice if you’re going formal, and trumpet gowns are making a splash.  Trumpets are slightly more dramatic than a mermaid cut, and a great choice for an extravagant wedding.  As for color, all off-white choices, like champagne, are hugely popular this year.

Ruffled bodices are making a comeback next year, mixed with layers of multi-colored embroidery or muted, dark shades. The Greek influence has been draping Oscar nominees for a couple of years now, and brides have picked up the slack: The tight-fitting, wrap-around coliseum look is huge. Once again, this one’s a figure-bender, so go this route only if you feel comfortable in cling.

As for your wedding party, minis (or “tea length”) are a delightful idea. Keep in mind, however, that not every bridesmaid will be thrilled about showing off her legs, so you should discuss it with them (remembering that you can always have your bridesmaids in various skirt lengths).  Another advantage of the shorter, cocktail bridesmaid dress is that your girls can wear them again.

Since fitting all your bridesmaids’ different figures is never easy, one trend that continues to be popular is letting each woman pick out her own outfit.  Simply let them know what you’re wearing (along with accessories), and give them a few restrictions.  Coliseum dresses look wonderful on the wedding party if the bride is going for a more structured, embroidered gown. (Once again, full-figured girls might not be thrilled with the prospect.) The most popular and safe style for all the girls is the Empire Waist, as it flows out above the hips and complements almost all figures.

The day of orange-taffeta is over (until it too makes a retro comeback). Go over your ideas with the girls and get their insights.  You are the one who ultimately decides, of course, you never know where you’re inspiration will come from.
