Gowns for Taller Brides

Wedding Dresses that Flatter Tall Brides

Now that Michelle Obama is in the White House, tall women have even more reason to celebrate their height. First ladies have always exemplified chic, so don’t “waist” time fretting over size. When it comes to wedding gowns, the tall bride has so many gorgeous options you’ll be on top of the world. Read on for some great guidelines.

According to New York bridal designer Mark Ingram, the tall bride is lucky because she can wear almost anything. “Tall and short isn’t a big issue anymore,” he says. “Women aren’t so worried about looking small next to their husbands.”

If you do want to minimize your height, however, he suggests a low waistline. “A ball gown skirt is a great look,” he says. “A natural or drop waistline works too.” Remember, also, that simpler dresses de-emphasize height.

On the flip side, says Ingram, your height also means you can afford to exaggerate you look. Lots of dress details can work in your favor, because you won’t get bogged down underneath them. For the tall bride, Ingram recommends minimal accessories, like a pair of earrings set off by a simple necklace. Anyone who’s seen Nicole Kidman or Geena Davis on the Red Carpet also knows that tall women like to accentuate their height, a trend that’s made it to wedding dresses.

“Long and languid is in,” says Ingram. Tall women look great in Princess-line or A-line dresses, as they add more height and can show off gorgeous gams. You’ll also be model perfect in a
Coliseum dress or a Sheath.

Taking another height cue from the first lady, many tall brides wear sleeveless wedding dresses, which automatically bring the eye upward. An added advantage? “The shoulder line balances the hips, making them look smaller.”

The only dress style Ingram cautions a tall bride about wearing is an
Empire Waist, as they’re cut so high up, you might look too tall. Other than that, you’re the kind of bride who can handle a tall order!
