Arriving to Your Wedding in Style, in NYC

New York City is one of the most glamorous places to get married: From the Empire of skyscrapers, to the serene sensation of Central Park and the elegance of Fifth Avenue -- everywhere you go you’ll find wedding glamour. Once you figure out your New York wedding transportation, getting there is half the fun.

Your NY wedding day transportation should be taken care of about three months’ prior to your wedding (six months if you’re getting married during prom season, March through June). How much you pay depends in huge part on your type of vehicle(s), but expect to pay about around $500 for a stretch limo in New York City. The options are practically limitless. You can travel in a Hummer, a Rolls Royce, vintage cars, or in a horse-drawn carriage (a wonderful idea if you’re getting married near Central Park). Each type of vehicle has a passenger limit, so figure out ahead of time how many people will need transportation to your wedding.

Typically in Manhattan weddings, the bride travels with her bridesmaids and Dad. The groom and his best man travel in a separate car, and the mothers get their own vehicle. These “rules” are simply guidelines, so go your own way. If you want to rent a bus, you can comfortably fit a whole gaggle of guests in the vehicle.

When interviewing wedding transportation providers in New York, ask about discounts. They might have deals for extra cars, and you might save money if you hire the same drivers for rehearsal dinners, etc. After you pick your vehicle, make sure it’s the color you want (hint: non-white limos are cheaper). Ask to see the vehicle to make sure it’s in proper condition.

To find NY transportation providers, get referrals from friends and your other local wedding vendors. When interviewing, get referrals from previous clients, and check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints. Once you’re ready to sign on the dotted line, go over the basics: Make sure the car you’ve picked will be the same vehicle on your wedding day (and that it’s the color you requested), go over the drivers’ attire (he’ll need to look formal if it matches your affair), and find out who the substitute driver is should a last-minute emergency occur. Check to see if gas is your responsibility or the company’s.

In New York, you’ll be expected to tip drivers, which should be 20% if the service is good. Assign the tip duty to someone ahead of time (the Best Man often covers gratuity). New York can be highly congested, and if you’re getting married outside of Manhattan, directions can be complicated. Make sure your driver has a clear map of all destinations and alternate routes (and make sure they're aware of any en-route construction). Also, exchange cell phones numbers (including at least one person who won’t be in a vehicle). You should also give the driver a landline number, in case a battery dies, or you’re wedding is located somewhere that has poor cell-phone service (the Hamptons is known for bad connections).
