Weddings in the Hooser State
“This is it!” starts the beginning of the theme song for the classic sitcom “One Day at a Time.” And “this” refers to Indianapolis, where the family sets up home. Since nothing is more “It” than your wedding day, take advantage of all the capital of Indiana has to offer.
Appropriately nicknamed The Crossroads of America, the nation’s 14th largest city is home to big events (The Indianapolis 500), and smaller ones (9 colleges mean an array of scattered pubs and restaurants). You and your guests can tour museums and memorable sites—Indianapolis is second only to Washington, D.C., for the amount of city monuments inside its limits—with options ranging from the sports-filled Hall of Fame Museum to the Gaugin-filled Museum of Art.
Five-star restaurants are situated next to charming, boutique hotels, so your ceremony sites are plentiful. For dining, steakhouses are big inside this Midwestern state, and a must to get a feel for Middle America old-fashioned dining. You’ll also find plenty of seafood and Continental restaurants, once you’re in need of a lighter meal.
Not surprisingly, sports bars are scattered across the city (those guys in the party are headed for a thrill), but martini bars are also a huge hit, as well as quiet, subdued jazz clubs where any drink goes. Worried you’ll get lost? Unlike other major cities, Indianapolis’s largest skyscraper is 48 stories tall, so the only shadow you’re likely to be caught under is your new hubby’s.
Indianapolis’s geography is fairly flat, with slopes so gradual you probably won’t notice—the better to work off that wedding food and take a run, ride, or romantic ramble. Do try to unleash the inner-Hooser in you and set-up a basketball game for you and your guests
Weather-wise, you’re in the heartland of America, with four distinct seasons. Winters are cold, sometimes dropping below zero, and summers temperatures can zoom up into the 90s. Fall and Spring are mild, although April and May can sometimes surprise with cold fronts (and lots of showers).
Wherever you wed in Indianapolis, you’re about to become man and wife in the “Cross Your Heart” road to love!
