Pregnant With Possibilities

Maternity Bridal Fashions

Gone are the days when the pregnant bride was something taboo, usually ending with an elopement and a lot of excuses. Nowadays, brides with baby bellies are just as “big” as any other bride. So are their weddings.

As for fashion, designers work with expectant brides all the time, and are used to adjusting gowns to accommodate your belly. If you’d rather not highlight your pregnancy, a princess-line dress is dynamite, as it flows down directly from below the breasts. Also, your belly is a great accessory all by itself, so you don’t need a lot of extra frills and ruffles. If you’re self-conscious about the added weight, highlight those gorgeous gams or amazing arms. Depending on how far along you are, you can find a dress that conceals your stomach, with just a few alterations. A Basque waist is probably out of the question, as it’s like wearing a giant corset, but A-lines and cocktail dresses can both work wonders.

Maternal wisdom.
If you’re past the six-month mark, don’t try and hide your new look. Instead, like the saying goes, “Work with what you have.” Some brides highlight their natural shape, and there’s nothing more natural than a baby on the way. You can work with the store to make sure you’re dress has enough room to be taken out, if needed. If it’s too uncomfortable to wear a gown, stick with a simple suit, designed to fit.

On a side note, brides-to-be are perfectly acceptable in your bridal party, as well. Maids or Matrons Of Honor who are expecting have many of the same style options and an expecting bride has.  Clearly, you need to talk with her about how far along she is, so her outfit can be properly fitted. (And make sure she’s up to the duties that go along with the job; pregnancies can affect mothers-to-be in a variety of different ways, and some women just won’t have the energy – it’s nothing personal.)

Baby on board.
As for the ceremony itself, live it up, laugh, dance, do everything except drink. No one will be expecting you to indulge, so make sure the bartender whips you up a special sparkling cider for the “champagne” toast.  Some brides go as far as to make the entire ceremony alcohol-free, which is perfectly acceptable (provided you let them know in advance – guests will expect alcohol unless told otherwise), especially if you opt for a brunch or lunch affair.

Depending on how far along you are, your baby need not change your ceremony at all.  It all depends on what makes you comfortable and happy.  After all, your baby may be on its way, but your wedding is still your day.
