Decked-Out Dames

Considering Your Bridesmaids’ Jewelry

Just as bridesmaids wouldn’t wear white dresses to compete with the bride, they wouldn’t wear a diamond-studded tiara, either. Like other facets of the ensemble, the jewelry your “ladies” wear should complement your own look. That said, their jewelry should be gorgeous and flattering, and something they’ll adore adorning.

Adorned and adorable.
The main “rule” is that their accessories match the look and color of their outfits and the style of the ceremony. If your bridesmaids are decked out in peach, have them wear peach- and orange-colored necklaces, earrings, and bracelets. If they’re in a blue mood, have them wear shades of navy.  Like your own dress, don’t have them overdo it. If their outfits are simple, they can have a few more baubles. If your bridesmaids are going for a more formal look, their jewelry should be simple. Remember, less is always better in deference to the bride.  Also, let them know what jewelry you’ll be wearing, so they can coordinate appropriately. They should also coordinate with the other bridesmaids.

There is no rule that says the bridesmaids have to wear identical jewelry. Like various dresses, different types of jewelry can give them a touch of personality, highlight each lady’s personal features, and add to the wedding flair. Keep in mind their own preferences, too. While you might be set on dangling earrings for your girls, you might have forgotten that your best friend never got her ears pierced. Respect that choice, and find something all of them can wear.

You might want to lay down one rule, and let them act accordingly. For instance, you’ve decided to wear an antique brooch that’s been passed down for generations, and you want your bridesmaids to wear something that matches. Tell them the style and the color, and ask that they wear one too (or a pin), but slightly smaller. If your brooch is all diamonds, you can have them all wear a different, matching shade.

Gems for the girls.
A big trend today is to give jewelry to your bridesmaids as gifts. This is a great idea, and can solve a lot of their shopping and expense problems. One caveat: Since it’s a gift, you don’t want it to be a necklace or bracelet that can only be worn at your wedding. It should be a piece of jewelry that each girl will treasure, and want to wear again and again. Many jewelry designers specialize in jewelry for your wedding that includes the bridesmaids’ gems. Show her your colors, give her your ideas, and have her make something extra special for the ladies standing by your side.
