Dallas Wedding Makeup Artists Guide
Bridal Beauty, Texas Style!

In a place as big as Texas, how can you find the local wedding day makeup artist who’s right for you?  Rely on your friends and neighbors!  We spoke with makeup artists in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and they stressed the importance of talking to some of your other vendors for the inside scoop.  It’s no surprise that a famously friendly state like Texas would boast wedding professionals who often work together.  Inquire with your caterer or photographer and they can likely recommend a great makeup artist from experience.

Texas beauty queens.
There are different ways to prescreen your potential artist.  Contact salons for referrals.  It stands to reason that they would only give you the information of an
artist they think very highly of, since the artist’s reputation will reflect upon the salon’s.  Or, if you like the face-to-face approach, visit the makeup counter of a department store you like and ask about their rates and techniques -- you may even get an impromptu makeup trial!

Makeup trials in general are a great idea.  You’ll get to check out their abilities as well as their personality.  Remember, you’re hiring the person who will be one of the last to see you before you walk down the aisle – you better like them!  Since these trials can take up to a few hours (not to mention expensive products) they’re rarely free, so multiple tests can get costly.  Instead, wait until you’ve decided on one or just a couple of Dallas/Fort Worth makeup artists before you schedule a trial.  That way, it can have multiple functions: A final decider for you and a dress rehearsal for them.

Go to your trial prepared.  Have at least a vague idea of the look you’re going for, and even bring some photos which approximate what you mean.  Maybe the best accessory to bring is a friend whose opinion you trust.  The artist should be communicating with you about what he/she is doing and why.  This is a great way to start a dialogue going between you.  If you like what they are doing, then tell them so, and be as specific as possible so they have a clear idea of how to make you look your best.  Just remember that it won’t be your wedding day yet, so don’t expect to look just as you will on your big day!  Part of having makeup done well is that it works with how you’re dressed, so expect a bit more casual of a look when the trial is over.  Don’t worry, so long as you like their techniques and personality, they will make sure you look just as you should with your hair done, your dress on, and your aisle waiting.

When you decide on your artist, sign a detailed contract that specifies the makeup needed, the time required and any fees and expenses (including travel time).  Also, find out if your artist has scheduled any other clients on your wedding day.  If so, make sure that plenty of extra time is allowed for traffic, touch-ups or mishaps.  You certainly shouldn’t rush the process, but the sooner you hire the better.  For a large and busy area like the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, aim to have your artist selected about 6 months before your wedding.  Since we’re talking about Northern Texas here, where there are a lot of brides, it isn’t unusual to book an artist an entire year before a wedding.

Getting’ ready.
Have you considered how you’re going to work that gorgeous makeup on your wedding day?  Dallas/Fort Worth makeup artist Ginger Benedict suggests you practice your pout in the weeks leading up to it.  Blend lip liners, colors and glosses to experiment with creating luscious lips.  You can have lots of fun trying out different shades, combinations, treatments and cosmetics.  On your big day, you’ll feel even more comfortable as you wow your guests with picture perfect lips from the aisle to the cake!

That’s Dallas/Ft. Worth wedding planning in a nutshell: Filled with great ideas and resources just waiting to be discovered!
