Got Silk?

Some Thoughts on Silk Flowers

The advantages of silk flowers for your wedding are fairly obvious. In fact, where do we start? They won’t wilt, they’ll survive cold or warm weather, they’re always in season, they don’t need watering, each stem will be perfectly shaped, no one’s going to have an allergic reaction, they’re not going to break, and if you use them for that bouquet, voila!: they’ll retain their “freshness” forever. And those are just some of the benefits.

Really rosy?
The disadvantages are fairly obvious too. No matter where you get them, they will never look or smell (you can buy them scented) as good as the real thing. That’s a simple flower fact of life. Not quite as obvious a reason for nixing the idea is that silk flowers are probably more expensive than real ones. That probably won’t be the case if you’re purchasing silk roses in Alaska, but otherwise expect to pay more. So if you go the faux flower route, do it because of convenience, not as a budget saver.

I never promised you a rose garden.

If you don’t want to be bothered with the mess of real flowers (or if, say, you are terribly allergic), you might try carrying a silk bouquet and placing the real things elsewhere. If you’re considering fake blooms because of the time of season or another convenience, you could have the fake ones placed around the site—to give the appearances of a lush flower arrangement—and then use real ones for the centerpieces. You might even ask your florist about the idea. Be warned, however: Flower people tend to shun illegitimate petal pushing, as do purist relatives. If you decide to go all-out faux, call your local crafts store or search “silk flowers” online. You’ll find plenty of sites that will help your silk dreams grow.
