Considering a Painted Cake

Before you get to thinking that your hand-painted cake’s gonna require a trip to Home Depot and a few swatches, it’s not actually “paint”; hand-painted cakes are all the rage these days, and designer-delicious. Usually crafted from fondant, a frosting that is durable in the most humid weather, along with sugar, bakers are offering this service in styles so gorgeous you might have second thoughts about taking a first bite.

Cake art.

Couples have leaves, inscriptions, flowers, and fruits and berries hand-painted onto
the cakes, while some go more elaborate, with famous “scenes,” such as the Sistine Chapel (or maybe just a re-creation of the two of you), painted on the tasty wonders. Ironically enough, the flat surface of hand-painting can give your dessert a more three-dimensional quality, as, like a real painting, lines create illusions. Edible gold leaf, which has no copper, is extremely popular, and allows your cake to be as sophisticated as you are. The time and labor of hand-painting is going to up the budget (though some vendors will tell you traditional scribbling is more costly), and, as such, many couples opt for hand-painting on smaller cakes. Also, that replica of the Mona Lisa on your seven-tier cake might overshadow the bride’s dress. Opting for a hand-painted cake depends on how much you want to invest on this aspect of your wedding, and how much of a style statement you want your cake to make.

Having your cake and painting it too.

Painted cakes are just as easy to ship as regular cakes, but consider the guest list. If nephew Mikey’s going to hack away at the cake as soon as you’ve had your first bites, re-think the idea, or, better, yet, opt for one small painted cake and larger
sheet cake to bring out immediately after the cutting. Even though a hand-painted cake will taste just as scrumptious as a regular cake, a huge part of the joy is in the presentation; many couples also opt to give guests a slice to take with them, or as favors. If your guests are dessert fiends, all the more reason to have a sheet cake in waiting.

One quick Google search opens up a world of hand-painted cakes for you to drool over; and your baker and/or other vendors should be able to give you good recommendations on where to order them. The best part? You don’t need to cover the room with paper and put on your ugliest work jeans!
