What You Should Know About Getting Married in Maryland

Not only is Baltimore the city where “The Star Spangled Banner” was born, it’s the place where your new life will take flight. Maryland’s largest city is traditional and cultural, and steeped in U.S. history. Since it’s also situated between such other distinguished spots as New York and Washington, D.C., it’s kept up with America’s pulse.

Plump with neighborhoods and parks (the tallest building is only 40 stories high), you can celebrate your big day in a tree-lined park or an intimate restaurant—or one of those famous steepled churches that grace New England’s vista. Baltimore has always stayed close to its working-class roots, exemplified by the charming pubs and taverns that surround the chic and staid residences. “Hairspray,” a musical about music overcoming racial barriers, was conceived here, and, to that end, so were such notable barrier-breakers as Odgen Nash and Michael Phelps.

Baltimore’s a major port city, which means gorgeous waterfront areas, lined with shopping, museums, and of course that legendary seafood (don’t leave without trying Maryland crab). The nation’s 20th largest city has no shortage of first-class wedding vendors and accommodations, so you needn’t worry about finding that top-notch caterer or finding ways to entertain your out-of-town guests.

Temperature-wise, Baltimore’s summers average in the 90’s, while winters hover in the 40’s. Rainfall is common in spring, summer, and fall, and snowstorms do hit come wintertime. Take all the wedding day precautions you would in any New England City—a rain-plan alternative, indoor ceremonies in the colder months. Most important, remember that you’re going to arrive to Baltimore as a twosome, and leave as newlyweds. Like the song says, “Good Morning, Baltimore!”
