Airbrush Wedding Makeup

Should Your Makeup Artist Use a Machine?

Airbrush wedding makeup has gained in popularity, and deciding whether or not to have your artist use it can be a tough decision. To help decide if it’s right for you, we talked to New York makeup artist Keri Berman about pros and cons and fabulous looks.

Berman says that she uses an airbrush machine if the bride has an extremely oily complexion or develops a bad case of acne before the wedding. “It’s a dryer look, so it’s great for girls who sweat a lot or have bad skin or a lot of blemishes,” she says. “It covers better than any makeup.”

Berman points out that, while airbrush machines are a drying process that keeps the makeup solid, if your makeup is applied with the right consistency, it’s only needed for emergencies. “I give brides the pros and cons,” she says. “I’ll do whatever they want, but they usually don’t ask for airbrush after we’ve spoken.” Berman adds that quality products will keep your makeup lasting the entire day, without looking heavy.

The reason why airbrush machines, which only take a few minutes to operate, are not automatically used, is that you tend to get less contour of the face and not as much highlight, says Berman. She doesn’t believe that artists use them as a cop-out, and once again says much of the look is personal preference.

As far as costs go, it all depends on your makeup needs and style. “I have two dollar brushes and eighty dollar brushes,” says Berman. “Good makeup is expensive, and an airbrush machine doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be spending any more money on your wedding.”

The smartest thing a bride can do is talk about airbrush machines with their makeup artists, discuss if your wedding is indoor or outdoor, in hot or cold weather, then figure out the options together. Do your homework and you’ll have a fantastic face.
