Make Sure They’ll Save the Date

Great Reminders for Your Wedding Day

If there’s one date you want your friends to remember it’s your wedding day. Save-the-date cards are a long-held tradition for achieving that goal, and in today’s ever-busy world, couples are finding new ways to keep their big day on friends’ calendars. Read on for memorable ideas.

“People are cutting back, but save-the-date cards are a great idea,” says Danielle Bobish of Curtain Up Events in New York City.“ Couples want their cards to be original, and there are different ways to go about that.”

In addition to the traditional cards, paperless cards have become a trend. Sent via email, you get to choose your stationery, and the result is an online envelope and card. Most of these services have a price (it’s free at OurWeddingDay here), but it’s cheaper than traditional stationery. “Some of them also give reminders at a later date,” adds Bobish. Paperless cards have gained in popularity because of the Green wedding movement.

If you’re looking for something different, Bobish suggests finding cards unique to your affair. Having a New York City wedding? Hit the stationery stores and send out cards with Big Apple backgrounds. “It doesn’t have to be the same photo, and you can do the scribbling yourself,” says Bobish.

Personal wedding websites are a great way to send out reminders, and to ease your own fears that guests will forget. Magnets have long been a popular save-the-date keepsake, as they go right on the fridge. “Paper does sometimes get tossed,” says Bobish. “You can make magnets yourself, too. Print a photo from your computer and buy the materials at somewhere like Staples.” Nowadays, couples are also taking their engagement photos early on, and attaching the picture to blank cards.

Whatever type of save-the-date card you opt for, keep in mind that you should send them out anywhere from 6 to 12 months before the wedding, depending in part on the style of your affair. “If you’re having lots of out of town guests, or are planning your ceremony on a holiday weekend, give your guests as much advance notice as possible,” says Bobish. “But anytime closer to the date than 6 months is a waste of time.”

If you’re worried about the environment, but don’t want to send paperless cards, you can always purchase recycled paper or cards printed on soy ink. This way you’ll help them save the date and also help save the environment.
