Invited Only to the Reception
The Etiquette of Inviting Someone to Your Wedding Party, But Not Your Wedding

Maybe your church is too small to accommodate more than a handful of guests. Or perhaps your budget can’t cover food and drinks for 500. For these reasons and more, you may be wondering if it’s acceptable to invite guests to just your ceremony and not your reception (or vice versa).

Half-right.

It’s not uncommon to invite guests to your reception without including them in your ceremony. Many couples prefer to keep their wedding a private experience, and then bring everyone together for the party afterwards, so most people wouldn’t be offended (unless they are a close family friend, in which case you may want to explain the situation to them personally).  Be aware that while most guests will bring gifts, they are not required to do so if only invited to the reception.

If your wedding and reception are being held on the same day, you should issue unique invitations for each event, sending both to those included in the wedding ceremony, and just the reception invitation to those only attending the party.

If your wedding and reception are being held on different dates, you may wish to mention the time and place of your marriage on the invitation. This extra detail will help avoid confusion and your guests will be clear about that they are attending.

One-sided.
You simply cannot invite someone to your ceremony and not to your reception.  It is a major etiquette no-no, and they will assume that you only invited them to your service to get another present.

The only exception if the guests in question are small children, and you’ve decided on an adults-only affair (which is even more easily achieved with an evening reception).  In this case, you should specify your wishes on the invitations to the parents.

If your budget has you worried, OurWeddingDay has plenty of hints and tips for making you money go farther.  There are plenty of things that you can do, but cutting your wedding guests from your reception can’t be one of them.
