Your Reception Table Linens
Dressing and Accessorizing Your Wedding Reception Tables

And you thought picking your own tablecloth was hectic. Reception linens are another item to factor in when choosing your ceremony site. You want them to be classy, durable, and, of course, fitting for your overall look (as well as the sides of the table).  Tablecloths and napkins are often included in the price of your reception hall, in which case your choices are limited to what’s offered. (Remember, too, that, depending on the style and formality of your affair, you might need items like table runners, chair covers, and chair pads.)

Ironing out your linen questions.

Not every caterer or hall, however, provides linens, in which case you need to do the research on your own. Your choices are much more varied than white or off-white.  In the linen world, you can buy red, green, purple, and just about every other color under the sun. You can choose solid colors or patterns. As for fabric, there’s silk, cotton, taffeta, velvet, lace… you name it, they’ve got you covered. Cotton is extremely durable, but not necessarily the most elegant fabric to place on your table. Similarly, lace is gorgeous, but less likely to withstand your nephew Brian’s sudden Crayon-coloring urge.

If your choices are provided by the hall, you’re task is fairly simple. The formality of their linens will already match the site. Also, they’ll provide linens that don’t clash with the decorations.  You will need to make sure they know your wedding colors, so the blue tablecloth doesn’t clash with the green bridesmaids’ dresses. If the work is up to you, talk to your site about style and color recommendations. Most linen experts can tell you what does and doesn’t clash. Feel free to show your linen supplier a photo of your dress, and tell them about all other style factors: the flowers, the other dresses, and, of course, the formality.  We can’t stress how important it is to always bring along at least one friend with you when picking out any element for your affair. Linens are no exception.

Even if that gorgeous damask tablecloth is what you really want, it might not be the best choice for a barbecue affair. Be honest and upfront with vendors: If you need something durable, listen to their suggestions. If the affair is planned for outside, make sure the linen vendors know, so they can help you pick something that won’t get destroyed in bad weather. Once you have all the details figured out, your wedding linens will be a perfect match for your ceremony.
