Inappropriate Reception Music

What Not to Play!

We got to thinking about the least-romantic songs that get played at weddings. Those songs that get mistaken for "sweet" because of their melody or the wrong interpretation of its lyrics, but are really nasty... or actually about a break-up, or death, or a creepy stalker... you get the idea.

Here's a few tunes that we've heard recently at weddings that maybe should have been reconsidered. You might want to listen to them a bit more closely before you dance your first dance to them:

  • Every Breath You Take by The Police
  • Keep On Lovin' You by REO Speedwagon
  • Your Body Is A Wonderland by John Mayer
  • I Will Always Love You by Dolly Parton (or Whitney Houston)
  • White Wedding by Billy Idol
  • Just Like Heaven by The Cure
  • My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion
  • Possession by Sarah MacLachlan
  • Here's To the Night by Eve 6
  • You Are the Everything by R.E.M.
  • I Don't Want to Wait by Paula Cole
  • End Of the Road by Boyz II Men
  • One by U2
  • Respect by Aretha Franklin

Which songs have you mistaken as romantic? Don't feel embarrassed. We know someone who only just realized that Little Red Corvette is NOT about a car!

When choosing your wedding reception music make sure to steer clear of songs that give the wrong message. Most music at wedding receptions includes dance classics that appeal to a broad demographic, and love songs. The following list of inappropriate wedding songs will give you an idea of what not to put on your perfect wedding mix.

  • D-I-V-O-R-C-E by Tammy Wynette: The title of this song makes it clear why this should not be played at your wedding reception. This song is about a divorce being finalized, which is the opposite of the message you want to send to your guests and your partner.

  • Separate Ways by Journey: This is a painful song about the loss of a love once shared.

  • A Man Needs a Maid by Neil Young: Any song that has the lyrics “Just someone to keep my house clean, fix my meals and go away” isn’t a track you’ll want to add to your wedding song list.

  • I Don’t Love Anyone by Belle and Sebastian: If you didn’t love anyone then you certainly wouldn’t be getting married.

  • A Quick One, While He’s Away by The Who: Make sure you don’t choose any songs that explore the subject of infidelity.

  • Gold Digger by Kanye West: Even though this is a fantastic song to play at a dance party, you should keep it off of your wedding reception dance floor.

  • Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now by The Smiths: Steer clear of any song with a negative message on your happy day.
