Choosing Your Centerpieces
Decorating the Tables of Your Wedding Reception

Centerpieces are one of the most beautiful aspects of your reception. They’re especially important to the bride and groom, as guests will mull around them, ooh and ah, even take them home. Choosing the right centerpieces for your reception varies, depending on your theme, budget and style.

Center of attention.
While the typical image of a centerpiece involves a bouquet, more couples are opting for different styles. (Note: Flowers eat up about 10 percent of your budget, so scaling back on centerpieces is a great way to save money.) You can try something simple and elegant, like one bloom on each table, or opt out of petals altogether. Nighttime ceremonies are perfect settings for candle centerpieces: They’re beautiful, classy, and inexpensive.  Some couple go for a more casual route and put seashells on the tables. In August, berries, gourds, and mini-pumpkins make for great table toppers. Or, you can double up the duties and place favors as centerpieces.

The only “rule” regarding centerpieces is that they not be so large they block guests from one another. Make sure whatever you choose isn’t so high that it covers up people’s faces. Once you go over a foot, you’re probably way over your, um, head. All of your loved ones should be able to chat without having to move aside the giant sunflower in the middle of the table.

Traditionally, the bride’s family were responsible for flowers (the groom paid for the bride’s bouquet), but, like weddings themselves, times change. If you are planning on having flower centerpieces, chances are you will have to provide them. The details are something you need to work out with your florist, and coordinate with your site. Incidentally, your florist will be accustomed to providing centerpieces and will help to match them to the rest of your theme and to your budget.

While guests love to take flowers home with them, another great idea is to call local hospitals and charity organizations, to see if they want them. It’s a great way to share the wonderful love you have with someone in need.
