Planning an Autumn Wedding
All About Planning Your Wedding for the Fall

Fall weddings are all about color and depth: beautiful hues outside to match the beautiful shades of your love. Once an off-season for weddings, autumn is now an extremely popular time to get married.

Legend of the fall.
Nature plays an important role. In addition to wedding colors like plum, orange, and green, liven things up with nature itself; centerpieces often include gourds, tiny pumpkins, and berries. Couples like to decorate the reception site with wheat and bales of hay. Multi-colored, multi-fabric linens are a big hit, as are special cocktails (Manhattans are a perfect fall drink). Cider’s a great choice too—spiked for the adults with port or brandy, just cinnamon for the kids.  And speaking of port: Wine is a biggie in autumn. If you’re connoisseurs, or know someone who is, include an extensive wine list, or even use a bottle of wine as a favor or part of the centerpieces.  And wine tastings can make for an excellent batchelorette party.

Like any wedding, however, you’re not bound to a “fall theme.” If you want to wear pink, go for it. The only “rules” are practical ones. Spaghetti straps might look great on you and your bridesmaids, but if it’s chilly those goose bumps on your arms, and purple lips (from the cold) are going to be an unpleasant distraction. You can go as formal as you like with the dress, the dinner, the attire, or you can go a simpler route and make it a casual, cocktail affair. It’s the time of year when men can wear top hat and tails or khakis and white shirts, depending on your mood.

Autumn, like spring, falls into the “iffy” weather category. Depending on where you live, it can be very cold or very warm, or somewhere in between. Nights, regardless, are likely to get chilly. Unless you’re having an Arizona wedding, you have to be prepared for both. For many, that means shunning the outdoor idea altogether and having an indoor ceremony. If your site allows it, you can have an outdoor aisle, covered with fall leaves, and then a reception indoors. Just make sure you have a matching shawl to go with your dress, and something for the bridesmaids as well. Also, if you are having any part of the ceremony or reception outdoors, alert guests, and remind them to bring something as a cover-up. Then fall back into your wedded bliss.
