Writing Renewal Ceremony Vows

Personalizing Your Second Wedding

There are many reasons to plan a vow
renewal ceremony. Some people renew their vows on their wedding anniversary in order to celebrate their commitment to each other, whether it is at 5 years or 50 years. Other reasons to renew vows include:

  1. to throw a more intimate party where the two of you (and your romantic wedding vows) are the center of the celebration, as opposed the frenzy and chaos of party planning;

  2. to have a do-over celebration if you had some sort of debacle at your first wedding;

  3. some sort of major tension or obstacle arose during the course of your marriage, and you want to effectively “start over,” as a symbol of your renewed commitment.

Writing wedding vows is a great way to personalize your vow renewal ceremony. If you are stuck (or have difficulty writing or expressing yourself), start by writing your spouse a letter. Don’t even think about wedding vows or a ceremony. What are the things that are most intimate to your heart? After you finish your letter, pick out some of the phrases that you like most, the ones that really get to the core of what you want to communicate. At this point, ask someone you trust to help you put these phrases into your wedding vows.
