Planning a Weeknight Wedding

What You Need to Know About Mid-Week Ceremonies

Weeknight weddings are making a big splash these days, especially with the obvious cost-cutting advantages. If you’re thinking about a weeknight wedding, there are pros and cons. Read on to see if a “school night” ceremony is something to put on your wedding check list.

Cheaper wedding venues are a huge reason why couples opt for weeknight weddings, and you can save a lot of cash if you avoid Saturday night. While reception halls will almost always be cheaper during the week, do not automatically assume you’re going to save big-time in every category. Many vendors and bands are hired for business functions during the week.

“It’s going to be much easier to book that site with the two-year waiting list if you choose a weeknight,” says Danielle Bobish of Curtain Up Events in New York City.  “But check with other vendors to make sure you’re getting a discount. “

Thursday nights are making a big hit, because it’s closer to the weekend. The advantage is that many long-distance travelers take Friday off. On the flip-side, some guests can’t take a day off, and those who are in town will probably skip out earlier than usual.

“Weeknight weddings take place later in the evening, in order that people will have time to get there,” says Bobish, “At the same time, they’re not going to stay as long because they have to work the next day.” For some couples, a smaller, shorter wedding is desirable, and that’s an especially good reason to choose a weeknight. Guests inevitably drink less, saving you money on bar costs, too. Plan on a smaller wedding guest list, or more “not attending” marks on your RSVP cards.

The dress code for evening, weeknight weddings tend to be more casual, and many people opt to have a cocktail party ceremony. Says Bobish, “The smart thing to do is keep the formality loose, so men can arrive to the ceremony in their work suits, and women can wear a black dress that they dressed-down during the day. They can remove their blazer and sensible pumps, and show up in accessories that dazzle.” Sounds like everyone’s ready for the weeknight.
