Deciding Whether Home Coverage is Needed
Planning an at-home wedding is so romantic: There’s the flower search, the gown, the…insurance? While filling out an insurance form before your big day might not sound like the most exciting aspect of getting married, it’s a subject you might want to consider.
Insurance plans vary, from about $500 to around $15,000, depending on the type of coverage you seek. When shopping around, carefully consider what different policies offer and whether or not it’s necessary for the affair you’re planning. At-home insurance can offer peace of mind, and is generally less-expensive than regular wedding insurance, as you don’t need to worry about, say, covering damage to the reception hall.
Most at-home insurance covers illness, either on the part of officiants or vital members of the wedding party, covering all or some of the cost of delaying the wedding. You can also cover yourself if the caterer goes out of business or your dress is accidentally destroyed (due to someone else’s error). Rain-delay insurance is popular too, helping with costs if you need to postpone the date due to bad weather.
For homeowners, one of the most sought-after insurance policies is liability; namely, protecting yourself if a guest is injured at the wedding. You can also protect yourself from damage to your home, even to gifts. (Before you purchase any insurance policy, check your current coverage to make sure you’re not already protected. Your homeowner’s insurance might already cover property damage.)
If you decide to buy insurance, read the fine print carefully; gift coverage isn’t especially important if you requested cash or donations to your favorite charity. Also, make sure the insurance offered isn’t something you’ve already taken care of. Rain insurance isn’t important if you’ve made preparations to set up a tent to transport the wedding inside.
Compare and contrast insurance policies, figure out what you want, and remember, no policy covers that classic case of cold feet.
