Also Called a "Sheath," It is an Elegant, Understated Wedding Gown
Understated and confident, the column is a silhouette that displays elegance casually. Also referred to as a sheath cut, it flows in a straight line from the neckline to the hem, revealing natural womanly curves by closely hugging the body. Its charms can work beautifully in a ‘don’t paint the peacock’ kind of way for casual or daytime weddings, or accented and accessorized into a more formal look.
In fact, because of its simplicity the column allows for many more alteration options than most other cuts. Play around with varying sleeve lengths, necklines and strapless designs, and consider the skirt length to be almost completely amendable. Depending on the material chosen, the gown can range from a grand statement to a flirty slip. Once you decide on the basic cut you can create your ideal gown for almost any type of ceremony.
Accentuating what’s natural.
The column is not for every body type. Like the mermaid cut, the column silhouette is most flattering on a slender bride because it is not designed to hide problem areas, like a larger lower body. (There is some wiggle room here depending on the fabric choice: Heavier material, like damask, will stay in place to conceal minor flaws, but lighter silks or satin will be unforgiving.)
When thinking about your gown consider your curves, because the column is designed to hug them. Women with boxier frames may do well by integrating a sash or bodice to accent her waistline.
Petite brides should take extra notice of the column because it’s naturally elongating design will give the impression of greater height.
The right curves.
Take into account the formality of your ceremony; that will put you in the right direction on whether to go sexy and strapless, majestic with a long train, or romantic with bell sleeves. In any setting you’ll look dazzling while showing off your dangerous curves!
