Perfect Fits for the Full-Figured Brides
If you’re a plus-size bride, the most important thing to remember when choosing a wedding dress is to pick an outfit that makes you feel fabulous. There’s no rule that says you can’t wear a mini dress; as for shoes, the heel’s the limit. Many full-figured women love to show off their curves and do so with pizzazz. It’s your wedding, and your body, so work them both.
As for suggestions, a Princess Line tops New York Bridal Designer Mark Ingram’s list. “The cut has no waist, just one long, vertical line,” he says. Many A-Line dresses fall into this category and Ingram thinks they’re a smart, fashion-forward choice. If you’re confused about the look, think of the letter “A,” and imagine a dress line flowing in the same configuration.
Another popular option is an Empire Waist, cut right below the bust line. Jennifer Hudson sported a chic Empire Waist gown the night of her Oscar win, which showed off her figure in style. “It’s a look that’s all about the bust,” says Ingram. “You’re immediately drawn to it.”
Ball Gowns are also a ripe choice, especially if you want to flaunt your curves. You can cinch the dress with a corset, and the full skirt hides extra-wide hips. Ingram advises brides to avoid sleeves (“they add bulk”), and to go strapless, with a stole or coat. “You can take either off later in the evening.”
Necklines look fantastic with a plunging V, which creates length and makes the bride appear thinner. As for accessories, keep it to a minimum. Detailing, on the other hand, can work in your favor. “Some detail can be camouflaging,” says Ingram. “While a plain dress can accentuate your weight, some beaded patterns create an optical illusion of a small waistline.”
While plus-size brides tend to stay away from column dresses, and anything too clingy, the choice is completely yours. “It’s all about your comfort level,” says Ingram.
Whatever you wear, don it in style, After all, you only wed once!
