Wedding Party Accessories

You’ve got the dress, the site, and, of course, the guy. But how to accessorize your party? Nowadays, extras for the wedding party (and the bride) are fun and often frivolous. They also make great gifts. Read on for the latest add-ons.

Want to look 1940’s cool for your affair? Parasols are all the rage for bridesmaids, as well as the bride. “One bride I know walked down the aisle with a parasol because she’s allergic to flowers,” says Danielle Bobish of Curtain Up Events in New York City. “You can get them in a variety of colors, and they look wonderful in photos.”

If you want to go back a couple of centuries, try fans. Many couples monogram them and give them out as bridesmaids’ gifts. They look classic for a formal, garden affair, and are a cherished keepsake.

Wrist corsages are still very popular, tied with double-faced satin. “They don’t look like those horrible things we wore to our proms,” says Bobish.

Jewelry has taken a funky turn as well, with bridesmaids wearing chunkier, “statement” pieces, often fake. “There’s a ghetto fabulous trend these days, “says Bobish, “and it extends to men as well. A lot of guys are donning canes, which are just for show.”

Speaking of guys, their accessories have always been a little less extravagant. Straight ties are more popular than ever, and, for gifts, cuff links and pocket watches still rule. Bobish says she’s seen a growing number of tie clips as well.

Bobish’s favorite male accessory of late has been Converse. She worked at a wedding in which all the men in the party donned the sneakers, instead of formal shoes. “It was a great way to get the men involved, including the Dads.”

Whatever you decide for your affair, you’re going to have some big shoes to fill!
