Find a Perfect Blend of Modern and Timeless
As she began her quest for the right bridal gown, a recent bride said that she wanted something reminiscent of “Grace Kelly.” Before knowing any technical terms, or knowing whether she wanted “sleeveless” or “A-line,” she knew that she wanted her dress to speak of another era, though in an updated and modern way. These sentiments are not uncommon among brides today. Vintage wedding gowns, as well as vintage wedding shoes and vintage hairstyles, are so popular that many designers have completely transformed their fall and spring lines.
In 1956, Priscilla Kidder, the designer behind Priscilla of Boston, was commissioned to design the bridesmaids dresses for Grace Kelly’s wedding; other celebrity and high profile weddings soon followed, such as three Presidential daughters, Luci Johnson (‘65), Julie Nixon (‘68), and Tricia Nixon (’71). Using elements such as French laces (from Alençon, Chantilly, and Lyon), hand crafted beadwork, and sumptuous silks, Priscilla’s gowns were exquisite. Designers today still follow her lead, mixing vintage laces and fabrics with modern updates such as a more streamlined cut. A dress with vintage elements such as a corseted back, is both sexy and classy at the same time; the marriage of the modern and the antique is superb when done correctly.
Remember that it is important to consider your venue when looking at vintage wedding gowns; you will find that the venue and dress decision often correspond. If you are getting married at a historic location, a vintage look is appropriate, but a golf club may call for something a bit more modern, though still retro-chic.
