The Groom’s Tie

Modern Ways to Accessorize His Wedding Day Look

When it comes to your groom’s tie, the most common wedding option is the classic bow-tie. If he’s going formal, it’s also a must.  If your groom is all thumbs when it comes to tying a bow, he can either purchase one with a strap (the most common) or enlist an expert (someone in the wedding party who is a bow-tie pro, and can be there the day of). Most tuxedos come with bow ties, so you’re not going to have to fret over the type of tie you need. There are also web sites that offer instructions; if you’re determined to DIY, practice a lot!

If your wedding is somewhat less formal, bow ties in different colors or patterns can be a nice change. Also, the groom can wear a solid color, with the groomsmen donning ties in a complementary color or style. Make sure all ties go with the bridesmaids’ outfits.  While vests have become a common replacement for cummerbunds, bow ties should be matched with cummerbunds—and can frequently be purchased together.

Classic neckties are a popular wedding choice today, and vary in formality. To make your guy stand out, he can wear a pleated tie, which adds a hint of formality to the affair. Once again, have him wear black and the groomsmen another color. Ties can also be purchased in a variety of materials and price ranges. For the less formal look, you can also try slimmer, longer ties.

If wearing his own tie, most wedding experts will tell you that a shiny tie made of silk is appropriate.  Should you be having a more relaxed, casual wedding, you can opt for something less traditional, but make sure a stylist sees all the ties together with the bridesmaids’ outfits. Unlike bow ties, traditional neckties look best with vests.

Finally, ascots are back, and add an elegant touch to a classic vest. Ascots work best for formal affairs, and, once again, the groomsmen can wear a style that is complementary in style or color. Make sure you go over all these options when you look into formalwear. You might be surprised at how dashing the choices are.
