Finding an Experienced Tailor
Wedding Dress Alterations Advice
When a bridal boutique or professional seamstress takes your measurements for your wedding gown, the size is decided by the largest part of you. For example, if you have a medium bust, small waist and wide hips, your dress size will be taken by the size of your hips. (So do not despair if the size you are given seems larger than you thought). For this reason, most wedding gowns need to be altered significantly. Here are some things to think about when considering wedding dress alterations:
- Make sure your tailor has the right experience. What is the fabric of your dress? If your dress has a lot of ornate beading or lace overlay, you need to make sure you choose a tailor who has substantial experience with wedding gowns. The same tailor who can do an excellent job with a pair of jeans or skirt may not have the necessary experience to fit a wedding gown.
- Go to at least three tailors to get an accurate idea of what should be done to your dress (and how much it should cost). This will also help you evaluate their experience level.
- Don’t be afraid to spend money on the alterations. This is your wedding dress, and you want it to fit perfectly. Why spend the money on the dress and neglect to alter it properly?
