4 Mother of the Bride Shopping Tips
Your wedding is a proud day for your mother. Help her choose a beautiful gown that complements your wedding party fashion.
- Ask your mother to start looking for a dress after you’ve chosen bridesmaid dresses and your wedding gown. While you may set the formality of your wedding fashion early on, your mother really needs to see what everyone else is wearing before she can choose her own gown.
- Go shopping with her. Just as your mother has probably helped you choose your wedding dress, you can help her choose her mother-of-the-bride gown. Schedule time to shop together. Don’t forget to make lunch or dinner plans so that you can spend some quality time together as part of the shopping errand.
- Look for dresses in the same general color family as your bridesmaid dresses or flowers. For example, if your attendants are wearing a deep blue, shop for a gown in a lighter shade of blue. Color-coordination enhances the look of group photos and helps your mother stand out in her special role.
- Shop for age-appropriate gowns. While your mother doesn’t need to look matronly, avoid short dresses, gowns from the juniors' department and any style elements reminiscent of prom dresses. Your mother should look elegant and stately on your wedding day.
