Boston Wedding Guide

What You Need to Get Married in Massachusetts

There’s no getting around the fact that Boston is one of the most sophisticated cities in the United States. Whether you’re strolling along Beacon Hill, watching Swan Boats glide in the water, or musing over life among the grounds of Harvard University, it doesn’t get much better than this; and you still haven’t been to the real 'Cheers' bar. If you marry in Massachusetts’ signature city, put on your best clothes and your most proper manners. This is a city that’s as good as it looks.

Like most New England cities, Boston gets quite cold in the winter, temperatures easily dropping into the 20s (before the wind chill). Spring and fall are mild (those fall colors will make for the most perfect photo backdrops you could ever hope for), and summers can be quite humid and with lots of rain; temperatures go up to the 90s. The city resonates with romance, and wedding halls and other venues are prepared for the different types of weather.  There is no shortage of vendors for every aspect of your wedding.

With all the stress involved in wedding planning, there’s one thing a Boston ceremony won’t add to your worries: things to do. Your guests can shop till they drop, head to Quincy Market for some of the best seafood in the country, and check out, among other things, Paul Revere’s house. Getting around is a breeze, and Boston’s efficient subway system is the oldest in the country.

There’s an image of Boston as classical all the way down to its musical tastes, and you can indeed spend a wonderful night at the symphony. Unknown to outsiders, however, is that the city has always had a vibrant rock and punk scene (acts as diverse as Aerosmith to Aimee Mann started in these parts), and rock clubs do the city like all those sparkling street lamps. Boston’s Irish background means lots of pubs to check out as well.

For your wedding, the choices are endless; the five star hotels along the Charles River are resplendent, or, in warmer months, you can head to one of the nearby seaside towns with their charming gazebos—make sure to pick up some fried clams. Your long-distance guests would be wise to spend a few extra days in town, or head out to Cape Cod or fabulous Martha’s Vineyard. The only thing you need to worry about if you get married in Boston is falling so madly in love with the city that you’ll never want to leave. Cheers to your annual return!
